"Why don't you make a real drum kit for kids?" That request by Manu Katche caught Yamaha's designers' ears and got them designing this drum set. Compact, it is designed for smaller players, but it is far from being a toy. A 16" x 16" 9-ply bass drum with a 6-ply 13" x 12" floor tom, 10" x 7" tom, and 5" x 12" snare are all made of quality Philippine mahogany using Yamaha's original Air Seal System to produce shells that are perfectly round. Easily transportable, these drums deliver tone that is so unbelievably real you'll be tempted to use it on gigs of your own.

Floating Bass Drum System
Height adjustment on the pedal side of the bass drum is possible with the pipe post stabilizer. Use of this system ensures that the beater makes contact at the center of the head. The stabilizer fits into a pipe clamp on the underside of the drum which allows quick and easy height adjustment. The post is equipped with a memory clamp that ensures subsequent settings will be quick and precise every time, while a pair of supports provide added stability.

Air Seal System for Superior Shells
The use of Yamaha's original Air Seal System is, in part, responsible for the superior quality found in Yamaha drum shells. Select woods are cut into plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. The resulting shells are perfectly round and of uniform thickness delivering superior tone quality and exceptional durability.

Hardware
The Junior Kit comes equipped with durable, but lightweight hardware. The set includes a snare stand specifically designed for the smaller- diameter snare drum. Cymbals sold separately.

Don't be fooled.

I know that the name of the kit is Junior and that is was orginally intended to be a 'kids' drum set, but the Manu Katche kit is much more than that. As a working jazz musician, I found it increasingly difficult to bring my regular, full size kit to some of our smaller gigs. When I began to search for a good alternative, I rested on the Gretsch Catilina Club and the Katche. The deciding factor between the two came down to features. The number of lugs on the Katche's components is exactly what you need for consistent tuning (6 per tom and snare, 8 on th bass). The kit originally came in wrapped finishes, but Yamaha has switched to lacquered finishes and the kit looks amazing. The 16' bass drum comes with a specially designed riser plate to let the pedal hit in the right place.

Now the bad news, I had to change the 1.6 mm rims that were standard. For most people these rims would be fine, but I am a tuning perfectionist and replaced them with S-hoops. The heads are okay as well but to make the set really sing you need better heads, I use Evans J1 on everything. While the hardware is of good quality, I did feel it lacked a little beef so I switched out the stock stands with Yamaha's 700 series stands. Now this kit is a professional sounding and looking as any I have seen.

The kit is worth the money if you are looking for a kit with a small stage footprint. Don't be fooled no one will think to call you Junior when they see and hear you play.

Not just for children

I first played the Manu Katch Jr kit at a youth rally. The set had been purchased at a yard sale for one of my band-mate's little brother, but we played with it at this venue because of it's easy transport size. I instantly fell in love with not only the sound of the set, but the size. This kit is deceptive. I didn't expect a high quality sound, but after experimenting with the tuning of the heads, I was able to produce a rock and roll sound that I liked. I knew then that I would buy the Manu Katche Jr kit to play all the time. Most of my online research showed that mostly be-bop or jazz drummers were interested in this kit, but I would recommend it for any style drummer. It's great for small venues, and if the stage/arena is bigger, simply apply drum mics (which you would anyway on a "real" set) and jam away. I do still struggle at times with getting a deep bass sound out of the 16" bass drum because of it's size. Right now I'm using an Evans EC2 head on the batter size, with the black Evans patch, tuned fairly loosely, and the stock head on the front side, again tuned pretty loose. I have a single t-shirt that barely dampens and depending on the humidity of the day, I usually like the sound. Again, just throw a bass drum mic in the drum and you can get any sound you want out of it if needed. I use Evans G2 clear batters on the toms, I kept the stock resonant heads for economic purposes, and at the moment I have a Remo Powerstroke 3 coated snare head. I may change that to a G2 coated in the near future though, to pursue a more open sound... In conclusion, this kit offers a pretty decent sound, especially for the price and the size. It's been 8 months since I've purchased the drums, and I enjoy playing them every day.

Good, only if your willing...

FEATURES: Includes the toms, snare, base drum, all the needed hardware. No cymbals though, I played with paistes at GC and boy did it sound GREAT.

QUALITY: The drums sound great, AWESOME for a junior kit.

VALUE: Honestly, I think this set is kinda overpriced, would sell good for 300, but sheesh, 800 for this?

OVERALL: It's an perfect set for the new drummer, and it's totally worth it if your willing to pay for it. Remember, I played it, I don't own it.

This drumset is really great. It can be made to sound really good. It comes with Remo Powerstroke 3's on all heads. The hardware is very high quality yet very lightweight. Can be setup in no time at all. Can be transported in very minimal space. When setup, it takes very little space. The 16" bass drum sounds like a cannon shot. This drum set is NOT just for kids. It is a professional kit and sounds like it.

Jr. Kit

I've had this kit for a number of years now and it's sustained some abuse from touring etc. It can withstand a lot of drunken tomfoolery. That's for sure. The drums themselves are not as gnarly as a full siz kit, but neither are they quiet. The small bass drum has a good tone as long as everything is finger tight (loctite). The floor tom has great tone though the tom tom can be tricky to coax a deeper sound out of.(pretty small. Duh) The snare is really great. I cut a bunch or wires off of the snare chain and she has a great and "odd" sound. Overall this is a great kit. And very small. I scrapped the front bass head and can pretty much pack the whole kit inside. I'd get another if this thing would just break. ok matt
