GREAT FOR THE MONEY...

Been using the Yamaha electric drums for years. They seem to sound stronger and fuller then the Roland stuff (in this price range)...Tried the Roland for about a week and sold them and bought another Yamaha set. Don't know why they put the volume knob on the back of the modual though...Needed to replace a cymbol pad after about a year due to mistriggering...They are user friendly and nice for the money...

I bought this set two years ago for the same price just to try electronics. Great experience. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. They're great for inside gigs with right amp. I was disappointed outside, probably due to lack of mass.

Beyond Roland flexibility

This kit was my first foray into electronic drumming, so I kept and open mind and dove in. After comparing it in stores with the Roland V-Drums, I found that the flexibilty of the Yamaha DTXpress was much richer than similar Roland setup. The coolest feature is the fact that it has a "live" and "practice" default setting that enables you to tweak individual levels for both gigs and jamming alone. Each individual trigger can be tuned, set for volume, and assigned a huge number of sounds, so you can build your kit as you like it. The band digs it because it eliminates stage volume problems in small venues, and it cuts WAY down on setup time. I have been using this product for 5 years, so here are the thumbs ups and downs:
Thumbs up: Versatilty, ease of programming, great rhythmn coach function, quick setup, loads of customization.
Thumbs Down: Manufacturing quality could be better, I've had to replace 2 cymbals pads that went bad and caused false triggering or no trigger at all, rack hardware that came loose in transit, and it could really use a stereo XLR output to the FOH board. Overall, I am VERY HAPPY!! Don't be afraid, GO DIGITAL!!

Multi-tracker's Best Friend

I bought this thing about a month after it came out, and I DO love it, but the Rolands that you can get in the price range of this thing are still better (and more expandable). One of the fun things about playing drums is being able to expand your set, and this just isn't a set that allows you to do that... That being said, to sounds that you get out of this set are amazing, and the three-zone cymbal triggers are convenient and do help you break out of the shell of restriction that most v-kits place on you, but electronic cymbals will never be the same as real ones. (That, of course, is a given, and really shouldn't count against the rating of this product, but it is something to think about for potential buyers) Also, the bass drum trigger is really too small to allow for a double-bass pedal. You can make it fit, but even then, the trigger has problems picking up every hit at higher speeds. However, I love the convenience of SILENT PRACTICE with this thing! I admit, I wouldn't have gotten an electronic kit if they weren't silent and good for multi-tracking, but they definitely are! While they aren't as good as Roland's kits of comparable price, they are still well worth the cash!

Worth every penny

I've owned the Roland V-Stage kit and now own this one. I can't really compare the two due to the price difference, but this offering from Yamaha holds its own. This setup is very sturdy and a breeze to set up. The sounds are sampled quite well and it has a few extra features that most drummers will find useful for building chops. I find that the kick pad trumps the Roland mesh pad in that the Roland was too bouncy and rebounded for a roll like hit too often. On the other hand the Yamaha snare is difficult to coax a light nuanced roll out of and can sound very MIDIish if you are not giving it a decent whack. One cymbal is chokable but the dual trigger feature takes concentrated hits to prevent the wrong sound from triggering. And my only other complaint would be the mushy high-hat control pedal which can be frustrating on fast HH work. Other than that, you soon forget that it's an electronic set when you are deep into the groove. The huge helping of sounds provide enough options to build a few good kits for everyday use and there are plenty of others to experiment with. Overall this kit, based on price, is a very solid value for anyone looking to record or practice without disturbing the neighbors or (more importantly) the spouse.
