I've owned two "superstar" sets. My first one was an original SK (not the HyperDrive series). I loved the set so much that when the SL Hyperdrive series came out, I just had to get one. I traded in my original superstar for the SL Hyperdrive. What a mistake. Don't get me wrong, I like this set to - but the dimensions aren't as nice. Tama redesigned the dimensions for what is supposed to be a better design - "but I don't agree with the choice they made". My original Superstar set sounded deeper and had more sustain in the toms. You could hear the heads working with the wood more. Little nuances like vibrations that a drum should have. Don't get me wrong, this to is a nice drum set - but I think Tama might of redesigned the Superstar set so that they could make it more expensive while leaving some of it's character and soul behind. This set is supposed to be an intermediate set; one of the best one's out there. Fantastic drum set! But Tama should have left the price and design alone.

The superstar is a great mid-leval set. I have played many kits and this is good for any thing. I was skeptal of buying but am very pleased with this set I really enjoy playing it. The bass is punchy because of the birch especially if you add a port hole the toms attack and resonate well the snare is ok but most people like me have many so that is ok. many people like these kits. Dave Grohl is a big fan of the 80s version so what does that tell you. good job tama keep on rockin like a superstar. peace

I got this set for christmas this year, and it's pretty good. I'm not gonna say it's the best or amazing or anything, but for it's price, you get a real bang for your buck. The bass drum is just the way I like it, warm with focused sustain (I suggest putting an Evans Emad on it). The floor tom rings a bit, but that's more of a personal tuning issue than anything. The rack tom is probably my favorite part of the set. Slap a coated EC2 on and it sings like none other. The snare is nice, not the best, but still good, and the hardware is solid. Overall, I'm very pleased with my decision and would recommend this set to anyone who likes a big drum sound.

This set is an incredible deal. I've had it for about 6 months now and I'm still in awe of it's quality. The biggest surprise to me was how long the stock heads have lasted. I play every day (and I play very hard) and the stock heads still haven't quit. My only concern would be the tom mounting system. The ball joint that enables you to move the tom however you want does not work so well. It slips when you play therefore causing your drum to rest on the bass drum. Another great thing about this kit is the color. I got sugar white and it's just down right sexy. If you're in the market for an intermediate kit, get this, you won't be dissapointed.

I bought this set last year and I am very pleased with it. The projection and tone of the snare and toms are great- even with the tama stock heads. The kick drum is awesome, by far one of the best I have used. The Star-Cast mount is great of course, though you may prefer to mount lower, in that case you'll need a mount on a cymbal stand or just a second snare stand. The only complaint is the wrap started to warp on the kick drum (due to my own negligence of leaving it sit in the back of my pickup on a blistering summer day.) This set is a great buy!
