Extended functions, more voices, and versatility that today's drummer demands. |
The Simmons SD9K Electronic Drum Kit is the next step up from the popular SD7K, with the expanded functionality and sequencing capabilities that capture the essence of the electronic drum realm at an affordable price.
Upgraded features
The pads feel incredibly life-like, with over 700 realistic sounds and an expressive hi-hat. The bass drum pad accommodates a double pedal. With a dual-zone snare pad, dual-zone cymbals with choke capability, 40 preset kits and space for 59 user kits, the SD9K delivers state-of-the-art electronic sounds with USB connectivity at an unbeatable price.
Lay it down and play it back
No matter what style you play, you owe it to yourself to explore the world of recording and sequencing possibilities that this electronic kit offers. With its 110 preset songs and 100 user songs you will never get bored of practice while playing along or creating your own songs. It also features a built-in metronome that has a range of 30-280 bpm's (beats per minute).
Imagine the possibilities
The Simmons SD9K Drum Set has live, electronic pads and hand percussion options letting you add exotic sounds that would otherwise require a large and space-consuming collection of instruments. Drum giants like Vinnie Colaiuta and Josh Freese incorporate electronic drums into their live kits, giving them a far broader palette to work from. Plus, with many bands playing live to sequenced backgrounds, electronics are essential for triggering and interacting with your backing tracks. In the studio, the wide variety of sample libraries available make electronic drum sets more useful than ever. Just play the song, and use the SD9K kit's MIDI signal to trigger your choice of samples, and you'll have drum tracks that can be endlessly altered as you mix. Replace the snare, kick or toms, or combine multiple samples for a massively powerful wall of sound.
Bass pedal sold separately.

Decent Set

After wanting the Yamaha DTXpress IV Special and going to buy it only to find that they had no racks for the kit, only the pads and module, I got this one. I actually got the SD9KR which is the red version that Simmons put out. It looks really nice and the module far exceeds the rest of the kit. For a grand, I would at least expect a mesh head snare. Yeah, you get the extra tom and cymbol, but it's hardly an even trade.
Overall the sounds are decent. The kick is louder than it needs to be.
The ride cymbol needs to be a little louder, but maybe that's just me. The kit is easy to set up and the features that the module offer are excellent. Now if Simmons could just work on the pads, making them a little....ok, a lot better, they would have a real contender for Roland. Until then, this kit is just a budget kit for the novice player who wants to beat on something.

Wish I got a Roland...

I would like to start this review with a huge Sigh.
I wish I got a roland...
First off for any people looking to play Double Bass, The kick drum that comes with this is basically a piece of metal. Its terribly hard to keep steady on with NO bounce back. Its also very loud. Where to next? Both my crash cymbals have fell apart which I've had to make shift fix(After 3 months of use) The Choke feature in these cymbals are just not good, Mine messed up and would choke on random so I had to go in and rip out the choke strip just not to go insane... Pads are Pads, They feel fine, The module Is great, I enjoy the sounds. But for money you could spend on this get a roland. YES you get 1 more pad with this, one more cymbal, But its quality that counts
I regret buying this kit so bad... So many frustrating nights throwing my sticks against the wall.
With a roland you will get a nicer kick PLUS a mesh Snare pad... No please, Listen to me like I should have listened to my friend, Roland is the way to go friends, I promise you this.

Get Some Rolands Instead!!!

Let me make this VERY simple: Simmons=quantity, Roland=quality. I've played both the Simmons and Roland sets of comparable price, and the Rolands FAR exceeded the Simmons in quality and overall playability. Yes, the Simmons set comes with two more pads and lots of features. But quite frankly, two more pads=two more pieces of useless junk. As for the features, this is the one (and ONLY one) area I will admit that Simmons has Roland beat. However, what's the point of more features on a piece of junk? Do yourself a favor and get item #580565 (or save up a little longer and buy #491358).

Everything about it is great except for the kick drum. Within the first 6 days the kick drum failed to trigger any response. I emailed Simmons and they sent me a new one in about a week. After I received the 2nd kick drum, 6 days later it failed again to trigger any response. I'm highly disappointed in the quality of the kick drums durability. I'll probably email Simmons a nasty letter, and buy a Roland or Yamaha Kick Drum to replace the twice replaced Simmons kick drum. What a joke. other than that everything else seems to be great.

A Great Buy

I purchased this set on 8/8/09 and so far, I'm very pleased, so far. The sound that it has is very close to an acoustic set. I've played several different sets over the years and have always been if'y on the whole electric drum set sound, till know. Have already done a recording with this set with the rest of the band and "OMG" the clearity is great. It has a great recordable sound, don't know yet about playing out live with it because I love my Gretsch set so we'll wait and see.
