Experience w/product: I own it

I bought this thing for three reasons: trigger my bass drum, get that thumpy 808 kick "bass drop sound," and get a second high-pitched snare. The Simmons model has reasonable met two of these requirements: the bass drum trigged sounds, but I have decided to use a ddrum trigger instead...no complaints so far. The Simmons trigger is much more sensitive to cross-talk, and randomly decides to stop working. The ddrum BD trigger is only $30, so no big deal.

The second snare works great: I found one that sounds like a ringy timballe, but it is exactly what I wanted (think of the end of "Ball Tongue" by Korn).

However, the 808 kick thing was a total waste. I can't believe there isn't a single sound on this kit that even comes close to that sound. I've found a down-tuned tom that works reasonably well, but I was pretty disappointed not to have this sound. Simmons even has something called 808S, but it does have the reverberation or bass to come close to that classic sound.

Once I got into this unit, I started looking into other triggers, modules, utilizing MIDI to use the exact sounds I wanted, etc. This thing is a good intro, but will not be the end of your electronic journey.

PS: there is no way to use this brain later down the road for a full electronic kit. Only certain plug-ins in the back will let you play notes anywhere near fast 16th note. So you can have fast bass drum and snare trigger, but if you go to hit fast notes down the toms, the brain cannot keep up. That's disappointing, but not what I purchased the thing for. So no big deal to me.
