The Sabian HHX Legacy Heavy Ride Cymbal's stick articulation remains semi-dry and crisp over a cushion of warm tone, while the large bell offers a brighter contrast.

Designed for drumming legend Dave Weckl, the Legacy heavy ride cymbal features a low-profile design and dual hammering - traditional hand hammering with jumbo-sized HHX 'Tone Projector' over hammering - creating a sound that is warm, dark, and very deep. Stick articulation is semi-dry and crisp over this cushion of warm tone. The large lathed but non-hammered bell offers a brighter contrast while blending with the overall sound. When played, the Legacy Heavy Ride responds with the stick articulation of a heavy model, but with the tonal response of a medium.

"The 'Heavy' name refers to this model being the heaviest within the Legacy range" said Sabian master product specialist Mark Love. "And though it has the crisp, clean stick articulation of a heavier cymbal, the weight of this model is in the medium range, so it is much more playable and musical than the name might suggest. As for the sound, Dave likes a clean, articulated stick response over a warm cushion of tone. Because his definition of darker is much deeper than most, designing that sound - crisp articulation over a low, deep and dark tonality - was extremely difficult. Extensive design work was necessary to make it happen, and our craftsmen employ various unique techniques in the process."

Concluded Weckl: "My time in the Vault revealed just how difficult it is to create many of the Legacy models. Between the idea and the actual cymbal there is an unbelievable amount of work. Like me, Mark Love and his team want to get the sounds as perfect as possible. Not only have they done an amazing job of doing this, their ability to be so consistent in making each cymbal sound and perform the way it should really impresses me."

The HHX Legacy Heavy Ride is individually hand crafted from Sabian B20 bronze. It is available exclusively in Natural Finish, and it quality-protected by a special Sabian Two-Year Warranty.

really like this guy. more of a medium cymbal than heavy. very low in tone, with a fantastic trashy crash, well relatively quick decay. a bit washy when crash/riding it, but not too bad. the bell on mine isn't super strong, but that's fine by me. i love it because it's trashy without being thin/dainty. great, woody stick defintion when riding it, that's loud enough to cut through.

Not really what the name implies, this "heavy" ride is of a medium weight. So to anyone out there looking for that killer rock ride, you might want to look at some thing that actually is heavy. Of course thats not to say you couldn't play rock with it, but its true beauty really opens up when you're not slamming the crap out of it.

It displays a good amount of stick definition, not stiff like a heavy ride but a little more than a conventional medium. I find that my model displays a little variation in texture across the bow, a little drier in a two inch strip three inches from the edge of the cymbal, the rest is a beautiful dark complex wash and doesn't overpower the stick definition until you start trying to keep up with louder volumes and you lose the definition you need for complex patterns at those volume levels. Unfortunately the the flip side is when you play too soft, its difficult evoke that wash without overwhelming the nature of low volume. The bell is great however: large, easy to strike and strong without being overpowering. Similar to the bell shape on the Paragon ride just lighter.

While its not the most versatile platter in my sound palette, it is a gorgeous sounding instrument when used right. It is professionally crafted and therefore expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I would recommend it as a main ride in an electric jazz or fusion setting where the volume stays within a medium to medium loud level.
