I am a former part-time gigging drummer living in an apt. When I was active, the only time i heard and got to experiment with my acoustic sound was on the gig...like learning to play a sax with no sound. With a hand injury, I had to quit playing regularly, and lost all interest (in 2000). Electronics were out of my price range. Until they brought out this "budget" kit with the mesh snare and new module. This and the price reduction were what I had been waiting for. In retail, I think they might sell more if they had salesmen that could demo the basics, like balancing the volume of the different kit pieces in relation to each other, and well as in relation to the muaic coming in. Dialing in the different kits is a no brainer. I think they should make it clear that the kick pad is made for a single pedal (to trigger). I made several trips to different stores checking this kit out, and not one was adjusted right. I still think the ride cymbal and hi hat could use more volume (my volume is maxed out). But overall, I love this kit. Mesh snare sounds are great(click is great), rubber pad toms are good (although you have to whack them a bit to get a response) and I like the hi-hat pad (but forget about a double stroke on it and the ride without more top end volume). I love being able to plug in my Ipod, get all the volumes adjusted, and go to town, without bothering anybody. And being able to change kit sounds in the middle of a song makes it all the more fun. I may even get out and start playing again!

I initially had purchased the TD-9S kit to use for home rehearsal (nice to play at 1:00 AM and not bother the wife), and a few gigs here and there. Since then, it’s become my kit of choice for half my gigs. The rest of the band loves it because they can hear everything I’m doing. The sound guy loves it because it is so easy to mix (even with the single output) and the fact that there is no drum noise from the stage to have to compensate for. I love this kit! Easy setup, easy to use, packed full of features and sounds. From the softest hit to the heaviest rim shot, Roland really has covered it all. Do yourself a favor and add one of the dual-trigger, 3-zone rides to the package.

Sounds are good...snare is excellent. Cymbals have a tendency to double trigger at times if played softly. Sometimes the cymbals dont trigger(rarely). Sounds good through pa. Wiring harness is a little on the cheap side. Bass sounds good. Looks good but overpriced. Easier to play vs acoustic.

I personally own a Yamaha DTXplorer, which I love, but I use this kit at church, we have a youth group band. I love this kit, it's amazing, but the price was way out of my range. Lots of people wonder about Yamaha vs. Roland, It all depends on what your doing with it. In the conflict of Roland vs. Yamaha, the only winner is you, they both make great kits.

I own an acoustic kit, and to be honest I was really stubborn about using electric drum kits. When I saw all of the features on it, it freaked me out at first! It takes a little while to get used to the size, but its way better than any acoustic kit! If you are on your first kit, get this instead of an acoustic, you'll save a lot more money in the end, trust me, I spent a whole bunch of money upgrading my kit over these past couple years and this would have helped me. If you live in a duplex like me or an apartment, you can just plug headphones in and no one will even hear it at all. I tried it out and it blew me away. You should really think about investing in a kit like this, its a good price for the quality.
