The Roland TD-20 Percussion Sound Module is Roland's most advanced percussion sound module ever. It offers the ultimate in sonic quality, over 500 new sounds, plus superb expressiveness and dynamic range when used with the new PD-125BK/105BK V-Pads and VH-12 V-Hi-Hat. With its superior sensitivity, you can play more naturally without having to adjust your playing technique. The TD-20 includes the ability to vary the rim shot and bass drum sounds depending on how you play. You also get new interval control for better snare drum rolls and more realistic cymbal swells. Close your eyes. Listen to every articulation and sound being faithfully re-created until the moment your cymbal fades away, and you'll swear this is a real acoustic set.

Enhanced Performance Features
Whether used live or in the studio, the TD-20 offers a host of powerful features designed to make life easy. Eight group faders are provided for adjusting the relative levels of each part (snare, kick, hi-hat, etc.), while 15 individual compressors and EQs let you sculpt each sound to perfection. The TD-20 also includes a 5-part sequencer loaded with preset backing patterns and plenty of room for your own—plus onboard Ambience effects, a stellar multi-effects processor and more. A new Mastering Room lets you add compression and EQ on the overall sound, while 10 analog outputs and a S/DPIF digital output give you plenty of options when mixing live or in the studio.

Convenient CompactFlash Storage and More
New to the TD-20 is a CompactFlash slot, which can be used for storing custom drum kits and sequencer patterns using optional memory cards. An expansion bay located on the underside means there's room for upgrades down the road. The TD-20 also features Roland's V-LINK technology. Using an optional video editor from Edirol, drummers can trigger images or change cameras from the pads or kick.

I'm no pro... but I had the money to buy a kick-ass set of electronic drums and I wanted a great sounding set. Out of the box this was quick and easy to setup... about 90 minutes but now that I have sone it I can setup/teardown in 45 min. The sound - W O W! Very crisp, responsive feel, mesh skins feel perfect! Rimshots, etc, Great! I'm very pleased with the purchase and highly recommend.

I love how roland makes the TD20 sound great, but makes it pretty much untouchable for any musician making less than 6 figures a year - which we all know is about 99.9% of musicians out there. Thanks a bunch Roland!

After years of using bad drum machines and getting yelled at by neighbors, I finally broke down and bought this unit. Mostly for recording, and partly for practicing, and partly because it's one of a few rhythm machines that have outputs for each instrument, albeit quarter inch and not balanced.

I was not about to pay the 5 grand for the whole Roland kit so I bought a Yamaha DX express to use. I had to also buy a Roland high hat controller which was $100. It all works fine together with no problems and cost less than 3 grand.

The TD20 sounds good, and has all the options you will want to create a good sounding kit. This is the best thing about the TD20. The sounds are high quality.

The on board sequencer is easy to use, BUT the quantize is rather primitive and to account for swing time, you have to do some tricky things, and even then, it's not quite right. The quantize makes it all very stiff. Which has led me to think that perhaps just using the midi kit into a computer sequencer with good drum sounds might be a better way to go for recording.

If you are a pro player, and not at all concerned with quantizing your tracks, then the TD20 will satisfy. If you are used to drum machines that can humanize a track, this will be a disappointment. One other critique is that you can only have as many drums per kit, as you have pads. So if you have 3toms, kick, snare, ride, crash, then you can not add shaker, tamborine, or anything else. Bummer. Great sounds, but perhaps there is a cheaper way to record drums.

It's not quite a real drum set

It's not a real drum set, but it's as close as the digital world has gotten. I do not own it (because it cost more than my car), but I play on it at least 3 times a week (which could be more than some people who own it). Some big steps up from the lesser Roland models are things like control over the digital microphone placement, an actual tuning feature (which helps A LOT), bigger screen with little cool-looking graphics (not really more functional, just cool user interface). All that should really be in any review of these drums is to say that you should go play them at least 5 times and really start exploring what they can do to see if it is right for you because just for the module is a lot of money for something you may not like.

I use this module, I like that I can customize and creat my kits, change the heads on the drums, change the position of the mics. the only draw back is there is no expandibility of the sounds, you cannot add sounds to this unit, but on the plus side it comes with a variety of basic standard drums sounds, so is good for what it was meant to do... imitate accoustic drum kits.
