A Must Have

Roto-toms are a great addition to any kit, great value for a big sound. First thing is go to the nearest hardware store and buy some wing nuts to add to the screw shaft. From the bottom wined them up under the tom set, Tune first then use the wing nut to lock it in pace. Stops nasty shocks from stage hands or sound guy's accidentally knocking out the tuning set up from the sound check till play time. Most famous roto tom solo check out the start of Time by Pink Floyd

An Art Form

Part of the drum family but do ot try to play them like normal drums. If you want to add that certain "something special" to your music then invest in these. They are cool and funky and if positioned for personal playing comfort they will please endlessly. For those of you who want to add latin percussion or subtle reggae fills, get a set. Personally I would not use them in Jazz, Blues or Country but my mind is open to ideas here. The stand leaves much to be desired. To me heavy duty means heavy duty and what is supplied does not even come close. I would suggest checking out a local welder and having a custom stand built. One word of warning, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN OR ROTATE....you will hear a sharp crack and no it's not the batter head (wish it was that easy), it's one or more of the base struts cracking in half for my stupidity. Other than this, I would not do without them on my kit.

Back in 79' I got my first set of roto toms to add to my 5pc Pearl kit. I'm also a big Neil Peart fan. They were made much better then but they still have the same cool sound. I use them a lot on fills and in solos. The rototrack hasn't changed much through the years and needs a redesign for sure! Unfortunately, the Remos aren't much better the the knock offs these days, but I still love them!

i got these when i bought a slightly used 7 piece pearl export set. i love the way the sound. don't get me wrong. but they are so heavy that they need their own stand or whatever you clamp them off of will keep falling. also they are great for when your ready to really start expanding your set but i dont see them as essential. you can get some awesome sounds out of them but i find them hard to insert into a song. they seem more likesomething used for drum solos and thats about all. they sound great but shouldn't be at the top of your priority list if your just starting off
