Advice on triggers

I`ve experimented with triggers for about a year now. I feel I have acheived a good level of insight on them. I use these Pulse triggers internally with very good results. On toms I mount them on the inside of the drum with the edge of the trigger making firm contact with the head. This does not impead the resonance. They trigger perfectly with a Roland TD-9 Module. On the Bass drum I adhere the trigger to the beater head internally in the dead center of the kick contact area. I use a double kick pedal and carefully balance my positioning while testing it through the module for balance. For the snare I reccomend the Roland Snare trigger for Roland Modules. A Ddrum snare trigger is a good choice for some modules too. This enables a rim shot option that you won`t get with the KD-1. I use all KD-1`s for the other drums because it has the longer cable. The tricky part of this set-up is getting a hole through to the inside of the drum. I prefer to cut a dime-size hole through the bottom head on toms near the edge and use the provided clamp, secured to the inside of the shell with a 1/4" screw. You can get the screws at a hardware store. Set your Module up properly, and you will have an amazing hybrid set-up for your kit. I love it!

These triggers are nearly useless with only one bass drum and a double pedal. I'm currently using two triggered bass drums and it works out just fine except the snare sets of the triggers here and there. You really have to stuff the bass drum and play with the tension of the head. I would suggest using thick heads too, to minimize mistriggering from vibrations from guitars/bass/ect.., like the EMAD or Superkick head. Also, I mounted the triggers on the inside of the bass drums pinned between the head and stuffing. Other than that, they do what they're meant to do for the price.

Nice price, quality construction, but...

I bought the KD-1 for use in the studio to add electronic "oomph" to my mic’d setup. This product works well as a trigger and sometimes too well. I had a lot of trouble finding a spot on the drum where the vibrations of the head wouldn't cause multiple triggering - I tune my kick drum batter somewhat loose. I ended up mounting it to the bass drum hoop with some PlastiTac, that gooey clay like substance that most people use to hang posters without making holes in the wall. Seems to work okay when the sensitivity is set low, but volume is compromised on settings with dynamic control. There is some give and take.
