Platinum Sparkle Burgundy Sparkle Midnight Steel Burst

This maple Mapex 6-piece Studioease Drum Set is appointed with 6-ply, 100% maple drum shells that produce full-bodied, rich, low tones. Some of the main appointments include the Mapex I.T.S. Mounting System, which has minimal contact for better tone, and the tom holders with an extra position for holding a cymbal arm. This drum set also features a full set of double-braced stands and a solid kick drum pedal with a Tri-Tonal Beater.

Mapex is proud to present the Meridian Drum Series to their arsenal of world-class drums. Mapex is offering lighter-weight, and less bulky appointments with the Meridian Series drums. From tom holders, to lugs, to their tom mounting system, Mapex has rethought everything on this drum kit to bring a lighter, easier to set up, and more tour-friendly set to market.

The drum shells feature Mapex's I.T.S. Mounting System that reinforces the commitment to less is more. It is compact while continuing to enhance overall drum response, by mounting to the lug casings for less drum shell contact. The Mapex mounting system also enables you to change drumheads while the tom is still mounted to the tom holder.

The included tom holders are light with little bulk, offering a sleek look and a light overall load. They are double tom mounts with a third middle position for adding a cymbal arm (not included), to make for less tripod stands on the floor, and more corner friendly. These feature form-fitting memory locks that are designed to fit the bottom contour of the mounting bracket for a quick and easy setup night after night without slipping.

I heard about this drum set through my drum teacher, and after returning a gretsch catalina club set, I wanted something that had great looks and great sound, and the gretsch just had great looks. The sound of this drum kit is very good for the price. Just like the description says, it has rich, low tones. One thing to note is that I got the indigo sparkle (which is beautiful), and if you get that color know that it's darker in real life, but still looks great. Bottom line, the hardware on it is high quality and if you want a really good sounding kit that's versatile (not only the sound, but the color is good for just about any genre), this might be the one for you (the stock heads sound good on it, also).

Mapex Meridian Maple Drum Review
Posted by Kevin from Dallas, Texas on Apr 2, 2009

I recently started playing out again (weekends) and wanted a set that was durable, inexpensive, but sounding good. My prior experience with Mapex drums has been positive. After researching a lot of companies I couldn’t find anything in this price range with all maple shells and decent hardware, not to mention the excellent Delmar rap (blue sparkle). The drums are a good deal, but if you want them to be on par with more expensive sets you need to do some tweaking.

The pinstripe heads are fine (Chinese Remo heads) but I changed them out for Evans G2 (toms). The snare drum takes some time to get a sound. I am also not a big fan of the plastic snare strainer harness (flex issues). I took the snare drum apart and finished off the inside shell with several coats of Tung oil. I changed out the snare tape for chord and changed out the head for a Remo Ambassador (much better now!).

It should be noted that all the lugs are single point of contact (one screw and a small placement spike). While the marketing hype states better sustain and lower mass on the shell, my gut instinct tells me “cost savings.” The weakest points of this kit are the bass drum hoops. Mapex should take a good look at Tama’s bass drum hoops as an example of lower cost and quality. The Mapex hoops are basically unfinished and sub-par. I replaced them with Keller twelve ply hoops (stained them pale yellow and coated them with polyurethane). This also made a difference in how well a double ply bass drum head will seat against the hoop.

The shells are good quality and the bearing edges are fine. All lugs are properly lubricated. Make sure you go through the entire kit and tighten up all bolts on the inside of the drum shell. I already had bolts rolling around in the bass drum after the first week of use. “All-in-all this is a very good kit for the money.” If you spend a little extra time and money on it you will have a great kit on par with a much more expensive set! The sound of these drums is maple all the way, big and punchy!
