These custom-built, American-made percussion instruments are based on a modern rethinking of the legendary, reinforced 3-ply Ludwig drum shells that set the standard for popular music throughout the 20th Century.

Incorporating many of the same methods used throughout its long and illustrious history, Ludwig's exclusive Legacy Classic shells are made in-house from the choicest cuts of hand-selected North American hardwoods. At its core is a single 1/8" ply of premium poplar for unyielding warmth and resonance. Inner and outer plies of 1/16" premium-grade North American maple are then cross-laminated to the core to reproduce that magical balance of power and clarity for the modern era. This proven design is then augmented with 1/4" single-ply maple reinforcement hoops, and rounded, classic-cut bearing edges for thundering lows and pronounced cut in any musical situation. The attractive maple outer shells are then treated in durable lacquer finishes. All Legacy Classic drums also feature Ludwig's Classic mini-lugs and traditional "Keystone" badges.

But Legacy Classic is not merely a blast from the past. I simply could not believe how good these sounded when I got to try them out at one of our local shops. The Focus, the Trueness of Tone, the Projection, gosh the list goes on and on. They sounded so good I paid the insane taxes on an IRA to get a set. 11 weeks Later they finally arrived with a 24,12,16 and 18" and just as I specified, i got the Internal Tone Controls, Classic FT Brackets and the Mini Classic Lugs. The 1st thing that struck me was the sheer wieght of these, WOW, Heavy, then the Quality of a Purebred, last was how easy they were to tune. I bought the Silver Sparkle and already had the Ebony Ambassadors waiting on them.I kept the stock reso ludwig heads and I did add a Cannon Power dot to the underneath side of each one of the floor tom batter heads and that gave them the sound I was looking for. These drums will make you forget about thin shells, and Timbre Matching, Forever!!!

OK, I have been anticipating the moment that I would meet these drums since I first heard of them. FINALLY, my local shop got a set in (well, they were special ordered for one of the employees, but still...) and I got a chance to check these out in person. First of all, Ludwig's classic 3-ply shells from the 60s are probably the BEST sounding drums to my 24-year-old ears. It's a shame that serious drummers my age are mostly relegated to hearing those drums in the beat-up condition that 40+ years can bring. Well, I think these new Legacy drums from Ludwig sound just as good as those sets from the 60s. With the prices and condition of those vintage drums moving in opposite directions, this may be the best option for that Ludwig sound. These are not cheap drums, but also not ridiculously overpriced IMO. However, I do think that they're a TAD bit overpriced for the technology used in the drums. They're supposedly custom made, but I think Ludwig should mass produce these and drop the prices a bit. The automation method is there, they've made these drums for decades! These are also NOT modern sounding drums, which again IMO, I think is a good thing. You can get standard mass produced modern drums for a lot cheaper, but you won't get a tone nearly as rich or sophisticated as these Luds. Only time will tell if these will hold up after 40+ years like the originals, but it's nice knowing that once all of the originals are gone, you can still get that tone! And I guess something can be said of "hand made" drums.
