Not perfect but what is?

This drum box has a few annoying aspects but was a wise followup to the DR770. BOSS got the price down by eliminating on board effects but added more and better bass samples. One can turn off the bass parts to the patterns easily with just a few button pushes but when copying any preset pattern to a user slot for tweaking you have the option of excluding the bass. I have the DR770 and still prefer it but I feel the 670 was a considerate marketing decision by BOSS. I would highly recommend this unit.

ok i have other roland drum machines and they're fine but i bought this so i could use the foot-pedal to stop/start. this machine sounds fine but the manual is very difficult compared with other roland manuals. the machine is not intuitive or user friendly and i couldn't access the bass at all. so i've ordered the DR-670 to exchange for this which should make roland very happy. so don't bother with the DR-3 if you like to program your own kits and beats because it's such a challenge.

I'm definitely pleased with my DR-670. The drum sounds are great but you will need to spend some time with your nose in the manual (or, better, get the training DVD).

I would like to clear up one problem that has been mentioned : the belief that the preset patterns bass parts can't be permanently turned off. This is not true. All you have to do is copy the preset pattern to a user pattern and then you can modify it all you want (including getting rid of the bass).

Two Things Wrong

This is a nice little drum machine. I bought the dual foot pedals and it is really cool to be able to insert fills when you want them - takes away a lot of the artificial beat-box sound. But it has two problems:

First - the screen doesn't light up. What the heck? I bought this for live performances, now I have to buy a book light or something. This is just ridiculous.

Second - there is a bass track with every drum track - fine if you're a guitarist looking for a drum machine to practice with, but gol-darn it, I'm a BASS PLAYER! There is no way to turn the bass tracks off permanently, you have to go through a menu every time you power up the unit.

One big plus, I have been a reggae fan since 1964, and so many drum machines have weak reggae beats. These ones are dread-out.

Too Much Fun!!!

Over the years I've always preferred all live instruments in my bands. However, lately I've been using this machine for smaller jobs--it rocks to high heaven. I now play lead guitar and drums at the same time. I use this machine, not ro record, but to perform live. I set it on a stand next to me with the footswitch (bought separately), and, having picked out the kit and tempo ahead of time, start the machine. The band jumps right in there. Whenever I feel the urge, I reach over and touch a button to play a fill, or I turn the knob one knotch to choose the same kit with a slightly fuller sound. And, sometimes, I get the band to simmer while I reach over and play some percussion for a little change. I use a lot of kits so that each song has its own flavor. It is not hard to find a kit to match. I'm having a ton of fun with this and greatly enjoying the grooves that our band is so easily slipping into.
