The USB Pro Drum Kit combines the popular Alesis Trigger I/O with drum kit controller hardware to give drummers a complete e-percussion kit for playing software drum modules using a highly accurate and expressive drum kit.

All of the pads in the USB Pro Drum Kit use real drum heads that deliver a very natural feel. The snare and tom pads have dual zone triggers for added expression. All of the cymbals have been designed for that true cymbal feel. The 13" Surge Crash and 16" Surge Ride cymbals have choke capability and the ride has dual-zone triggering. The kit also includes a 12" Surge electronic hi-hat (Single-zone), while the hi-hat controller pedal sends continuous controller messages for realistic hi-hat playability.

smartest way to spend money on realistic sound

I own a decent set of vdrums I paid $2,000 for. If something like this existed a year ago I would've invest in it. I can't attest for the quality of the pads but I know a lot of people use Alesis pads. If you invest in this, a low-latency audio recording interface (presonus firebox or m-audio audiophile 2496 are sufficient), and some better VST software (superior drummer 2.0, BFD2, etc.) you can get the best possible sound for your money and/or for a home studio. About half of what I spent can get you all of this. Just own a decent computer that will hold up to the requirements of the VST software.

GREAT for laying down tracks!

This is a great product for the money. You MUST spend the time to set this up before you are going to get good results so in other words this is not a toy. If you learn how to set this up, it will get the same job done for much cheaper. The pads feel nice, I loosened the heads a little to add some give. Cross talk has not been excessive but it would help greatly to put the Surge cymbals on separate cymbal stands instead of the rack. It's not a problem, but I think it would work much better. The BFD lite demo that came with it prompted me to do some research because it did sound impressive compared to older e-drum sounds I’ve heard. I ended up getting Superior Drummer 2.0 because they directly address the “machine gun effect” that is so common with electric kits and because it is cheaper and just as good as BFD. And the expansion packs aren’t overpriced like the BFD stuff. I’m still fine tuning the kit, but I plan on adding another trigger pad for a 4th tom and another surge cymbal. This would make this kit set up like my acoustic small venue kit set-up. All in all it’s been a great experience and I still have money to pay my light and water bills. By the way, this kit is made to run from your computer and you must buy separate software to trigger the sounds. Also, make sure your computer meets at least the minimum requirements of the software you buy. Otherwise, you’re never going to get It working smoothly. This is not to hook up to your family computer!!! I’m running this in Ableton Live and I now have drum tracks laid down in real time. (Yeah! I can play instead of chopping up samples for weeks on end to complete one song.) So bottom line, if you are serious about playing and recording and willing to learn how to use this, buy it, you won’t be disappointed. If you have no patience and money to flush down the toilet then buy something else.

Latency

The drums themselves are great. The drums provide a great feel and the cymbals are phenomenal with the technology. However, the latency is huge. If the drum were used for just a drum solo these would work, but if you try playing with a band it sounds horrendous. I am going to try the Alesis DM5 kit. Hopefully there is no latency issue at all.
