This is a great set I have been playing for fairly good time now, and it seems to last great with hard hitting double bass pedal, I have recorded with it and the sound is really great, awsome!!! sounds fantastic and it is fairly quit for practicing compared to normal acoustic sets, and something that was a turnoff with other sets and brands was that they didnt have true realistic sounds, and this one you can be positive you will have great sounding very real drum sounds, and you also have imitated effects sounds

This set is well built. The DM5 module may be dated, I would not personally use them for recording. If you buy the set, you need to perform the DM5 update on the Alesis website. I like the feel of the drums and surge cymbals. I prefer these over the mesh heads of the Roland. I use this set primarily for practice and as a midi controller for my production.

After hearing from this company from friends who said that they make a controller for one of those games that are taking over the world, I kind of thought they would be cheap. I spent most of the afternoon today at the local music store trying a set of these out and it was awesome! The cymbals feel so real! (I own real drums and the feel of electronic drums in comparison was always a turn off for me) The pads felt quite good to hit on too, not so much like drumming on a chunk of plastic as I remember from the last time I considered electronic drums. The whole set felt solid and was very enjoyable to play. The only drawback is that the basedrum pedal doesn't seem to be included...

New DM-5 Kit with Surge Cymbals

I really like this setup, especially for the money. Really hard to beat (no pun intended). The drums are pretty good and respond well, and being able to change the heads out is good for longevity and for changing the feel of playing. The Surge cymbols are fantastic, and are much better than flappy rubber. They are still fairly loud though (clanking sound) so don't plan on being very quiet. The strike area is a bit small, too, so you need to aim every hit or it won't trigger at all. The DM-5 brain is very good with hundreds of sounds from instruments I've never heard of. However, having only 21 sets built in is kind of lame. I'll be changing them up and saving my own kits ASAP. Hardware wise...this is where they saved money. The rack is kind of cheap and difficult to properly align, and the hh pedal is crap. It keeps sticking and is very cheaply made. I just bought a Roland pedal to replace it. My only other criticism was that the instructions for properly wiring the drums and cymbals into the brain were totally wrong. It took me a good half hour of randomly plugging and unplugging cables into the back of the brain ad striking various pads before it could get the proper sounds.
